Leaving Thought Behind — Since 2006, when I finally was able to stop thinking while painting, my painting practice has consisted of allowing the creative energy, which is inherent in all of us, to manifest itself. This energy is the primitive impulse behind every creative activity; as well as sexuality. It is also the core of life itself as understood by the devotees of the Dionysian religion of Ancient Greece. When I paint I simply open myself to this energy and let the paintings come out through my body with very little input from my mind. This process has been hinted at in the past by the surrealists but never fully realised. It was however achieved in its full plenitude by Jackson Pollock. The work in this show, produced during 2006, fits somewhere in between. It’s also a personal milestone in my practice since it was the first time I was able to liberate myself from ‘too much mind’ in the creative process. I think this modus operandi is very relevant – if a little hard to understand – today; as a counter-movement to the increasingly synthetic and mind-driven lives we live. My way of engaging with a more spiritual energy is to simply work in this manner.
